Some context that may be important:

**Mateo is very matted, and has the beginning of flees. This is because he was previously abandoned. He has been seen at the vet, revolution is on the way once pharmacy confirms with vet, and he is scheduled for bloodwork on the 10th, then a sedation and mat removal on the 19th.** With that out of the way, I have been trying to maintain the areas **AROUND** his mats to avoid more. **I do not attempt to cut or break up the mats**, just comb and brush the fur around it. The problem is, Mateo is very finicky, and if I tug even a little he runs away to his house. Thus far, Ive tried to distract him with treats and go very slowly as it seemed least stressful, but after this and after the mat removal, I will be having another person hold him with a towel/blanket so I can brush him slowly and properly without him resisting.

In the meantime: how can I soothe this? He doesn’t seem too bothered thankfully, it’s not very red, there’s no broken skin, and it’s not hot to the touch or anything. He itches a bit but that can be from the few fleas found thus far. Should I attempt anything on it or just leave it be? I’ve never had this happen before, but now I know he should only be brushed while held somehow.
