I saw this little bunny buddy shivering in a snow bank next to a somewhat busy road last night. I didn’t want anything bad to happen to him so I tried to scoop him, but he was too scared. I came back with some celery and a box and he came right over to me. I was able to give him a safe home for the night in my dog’s empty kennel with some blankets and towels and a lined shoebox. Fed him more celery, a little bit of kale, and a baby carrot. He seemed very hungry. Shy, but curious and friendly. Let me gently pet him.
I posted on nextdoor and the local Facebook lost and found pets page, but no one has responded yet. I named him Rutabaga Rabbitiwitz, after my least favorite cartoon rabbit, in hopes that it would curb my attachment to him, but that was unsuccessful. He’s such a sweet bunbun.
I dropped him off at the shelter this morning. I wish I could have kept him, but it turns out these little buddies are a fair amount of work, and I don’t trust my husky mix to not try to chase him (or worse). But I hope he finds a safe and loving home. I think somebody might have “released” him because they didn’t want to take care of him anymore. I know I did the right thing by giving him the best chance at a loving forever home. Maybe in the future I’ll be the right home for a bunny, but I know right now I’m not.
Goodbye Rutabaga! You are the best bunny I’ve known, and I miss you already.

I ended up with bunnies because someone dumped my girl. I was able to keep her thankfully as the dogs are with my parents.
