Rabbit

Rabbit has random bursts of being skittish? One minute he’ll be fine and cuddly with us and the next he panics and hides. There’s nothing in the house that poses as a threat. Any ideas??

Are you sure he’s scared? Maybe he’s just zoomin

They can hear things outside that you can’t hear, which can spook them. They also have poor depth perception, so they can mistake innocuous things for threatening things easily.

As prey animals, rabbits can be overly sensitive to strange smells, sounds, vibrations, etc. that we aren’t aware of. Some rabbits panic more than others, and there may not be much you can do about that.

My suggestion is to make sure there are places he can hide just a few feet away no matter where he is. Having bolt holes nearby, even if it’s just under the table, can make him feel more confident. I got new legs for my love seat that raised it up a few more inches, and my rabbits definitely prefer to cross the room underneath it now rather than go across the open floor.

My rabbits were rescues from a hoarder and were super skittish when I got them. My girl would panic bolt into walls, it was so bad. So, I had a lot of cardboard boxes and tunnels around for a while. They are mostly triggered by sound, so if I was going to do something scary, like vacuum, I would say “scary noises” and then thump my feet to communicate that before turning on the vacuum. They are much better now, and part of that is they are a few years older and wiser. But also, they feel safe and comfortable in their space.

Mine does this too. Sometimes it’s like she’s so involved in whatever she’s doing (eating, grooming, chilling) that she doesn’t hear me until I’m right there. And then she panics and runs.

My rabbit would do this sometimes at night. Come to find out when I would turn down the lights in the living room, our lamp would create shadows of the ceiling fan blades on the ceiling that freaked her out. It doesn’t take much and we aren’t always aware of what they are sensitive to.

He might be hearing a sound undetectable to human ears that makes him nervous.
